Smart Orchard System Integrates Blockchain to Reach Top 8 at Malaysia Blockchain Day Hackathon

Kuala Lumpur, July 16, 2025 — At the highly anticipated Malaysia Blockchain Day 2025, the locally developed agri-tech project Smart Orchard System (SOS) earned a place in the Top 8 of the $100,000 BGA × Masverse Joint Fund Hackathon. By combining blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, the project aims to revolutionize orchard management, enhance agricultural efficiency, and drive sustainability — becoming a leading example of how traditional industries can integrate with cutting-edge technology.

The hackathon was co-hosted by international nonprofit Blockchain for Good Alliance (BGA) and regional blockchain firm Masverse, with a mission to promote the vision of “Blockchain for Good.” The competition was divided into two tracks: Student Track and Real-World Developers & Startups Track. Smart Orchard System advanced as one of the Top 8 in the latter, giving it the opportunity to compete for up to $20,000 in funding and a potential invitation to the 2025 Web3Oscar showcase at UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Blockchain + Agriculture: Enabling Smart Orchards and Food Security

Smart Orchard System focuses on enhancing agricultural transparency and operational efficiency. The system uses IoT sensors to monitor critical environmental data in orchards — such as soil moisture, temperature, sunlight intensity, and tree health — and records this information on a blockchain network to ensure tamper-proof, verifiable, and highly transparent data.

This setup helps farmers optimize irrigation and pest control strategies while enabling end-to-end supply chain traceability, strengthening consumer confidence in food origins. SOS also includes a mobile app, Smart Orchard System (Viewer), which allows investors, managers, and agri-tech professionals to remotely monitor crop growth and return on investment — truly delivering on the promise of “orchard in your pocket.”

This innovation marks a new chapter for agricultural technology, ushering in a data-driven, sustainable, and tech-enabled smart farming model that responds to global demands for food safety, efficiency, and eco-friendly management.

Malaysian Agri-Tech Steps onto the Global Stage

Smart Orchard System’s success in making the Top 8 not only validates its technical feasibility and social impact but also underscores Malaysia’s potential in global blockchain-driven innovation. Among other standout finalists such as GiveHope, GreenPOS, PowerChain, PSSDI, Ralos Solar, Green Energy Network, and Wekongsi, SOS drew attention for its distinctive blend of agriculture and technology.

Together, these finalist projects reflect the growing diversity of blockchain applications — spanning energy sharing, digital identity, donation transparency, and clean energy solutions — reinforcing the idea that blockchain is not just for crypto, but a force for social advancement.
